Summary

Description: During the first part of the trip we will explore Quito and its sights, as well as the Northern Sierra with its fascinating cultural and natural diversity. The Equator monument Mitad del Mundo will be part of our programme, just like the loop hike around Lake Cuicocha, visits to handicrafts workshops, a journey on the Liberty Train, amongst many other highlights. Via Mindo – a small town amidst pristine cloud forests, and Santo Domingo – the centre of the Tsachila culture, we move on to the coast of Manabi Province. There, besides visits to Machalilla National Park and Isla de la Plata, we will have plenty of free time to relax on the beautiful beaches of the region. We will end the journey in Ecuador´s biggest city Guayaquil, also known as the "Pearl of the Pacific".

Itinerary

Day 1, Quito: Transfer airport-hotel, city tour to the historic center of Quito with its famous squares and churches, Cultural Centre Tianguéz. Accommodation in Quito.

Day 2, Quito: Visit to the Equator monument Mitad del Mundo and site museums, Museum Intiñan, free afternoon to visit other attractions in Quito. Accommodation in Quito.

Day 3, Cotacachi: Departure to Otavalo, marzipan workshops in Calderon, viewpoint Lake San Pablo, totora reed handicrafts in San Rafael, transfer to indigenous community near Cotacachi. Family homestay.

Day 4, Cotacachi: City tour of Otavalo and visit to handicrafts market Plaza de Ponchos, in the afternoon visit to several communal micro-enterprises and projects in the area. Family homestay in community.

Day 5, Cotacachi: Hike around Lake Cuicocha, city tour of Cotacachi and leather workshops, free afternoon for activities with host family, cultural night. Family homestay in community.

Day 6, Cotacachi: Liberty Train from Ibarra to Salinas, afro-ecuadorian culture, organic fruit and coffee farm, return to accommodation in private transport. Family homestay in community.

Day 7, Mindo: Departure to Mindo with stops at sites of interest along the way, afternoon hike to several waterfalls in cloud forest, birdwatching, nocturnal frog concert. Accommodation in Mindo.

Day 8, Santo Domingo: Free morning for activities in Mindo, departure to Santo Domingo, visit to community tourism project Tólon Pelé, Tsáchila culture. Accommodation in Santo Domingo.

Day 9, Puerto López: Departure to Puerto López, stops at sites of interest along the way, Montecristi and Museum Ciudad Alfaro, afternoon arrival in Puerto Lopez. Accomodation in Puerto López.

Day 10, Puerto López: Visit to a school in Guale, Machalilla National Park, hike to Los Frailes Beach, archeological museum in Agua Blanca. Accommodation in Puerto López.

Day 11, Puerto López: Whale watching depending on season (June to September), Tour of Isla de la Plata and hike on the island, birdwatching. Accommodation in Puerto López.

Day 12, Guayaquil: Departure to Guayaquil along Ruta del Sol ("Sun Route"), stops at sites of interests along the way, afternoon city tour of Guayaquil, Malecón 2000. Accommodation in Guayaquil.

Day 13, departure: free time for activities in Guayaquil, transfer to airport. End of tour.

What to bring?

Mandatory: Travel documents, sun protection, clothes (for warm coastal areas and cool Andean Highlands) and personal things for at least 7 days (along the way we will have the chance to do laundry and shop necessary things)

Recommended: camera, binoculars, swimwear

Optional: A good book for long travelling days
